Applying for Disability Living Allowance
Here are some guides, to assist you completing the forms.
- Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a financial benefit designed for children under 16 who are on a unique developmental path.
- While a formal diagnosis isn't required, you must provide evidence of the additional care, support, and supervision your child needs compared to their peers.
- Completing the application forms can be an emotional challenge for parent carers, as they focus on what your child struggles with. Remember, it’s important to keep in mind just what a unique and amazing individual they are.
- TOP TIP Contact Disability Living Allowance helpline
Telephone: 0800 121 4600 and request a paper form. You will have 6 weeks to return the form and if awarded, payment will be backdated to the date you enquired. - If you apply online it isn't backdated.

Access Card information
- The Access Card makes it simple to share your child or young person's access needs.
- It uses clear symbols to show what kind of support is required.
- You can use the Access Card to help venues and service providers understand access needs, making sure you have a better and easier experience wherever you visit.
The Access Card does more than just show what is needed. It’s a simple way to prove access requirements so you won’t have to keep explaining at different places. This helps venues realise the requirement to be accessible and encourages them to take action. The card not only helps your child or young person, it also helps make things better for everyone who needs support.
There is a small charge of £15.00 but the card is valid for 3 years. You can update your card anytime, for £5.00, should access requirements change.
